5G NR tester set for Mobile World Congress debut
Most network operators will implement 5G New Radio (NR) as an extension of their existing LTE mobile network (NSA). As a result, mobile devices will have to function in both worlds simultaneously. So Rohde & Schwarz has developed the R&S CMX500, a radio communication tester for 5G NR that can be seamlessly integrated into an existing LTE test environment.

5G devices operating in the mmWave range (FR2), such as smartphones and tablets, require over-the-air (OTA) testing since these devices usually have no RF port or interface to connect to, and conducted tests are therefore not possible. Rohde & Schwarz will introduce new products for RF parametric testing in both the FR1 and FR2 frequency ranges at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (February 25-28).

Companies advance mmWave measurement technology for 5G

MediaTek and Rohde & Schwarz are collaborating to perform over-the-air (OTA) tests of MediaTek’s 5G frontend modules and antenna arrays. The R&S TS8980R&D-M1 test system, which includes the new R&S ATS1800C CATR (compact antenna test range) chamber, will be used to fully characterise, verify and test the antenna performance of MediaTek’s 5G network solutions including its Helio M70 5G modem.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (February 25-28), Rohde & Schwarz will showcase a setup that enables 3D RF measurements of antenna characteristics in a temperature range from –20 °C to +85 °C. The R&S ZNA high-end vector network analyser, a powerful, universal test platform for characterising active and passive DUTs has been launched by Rohde & Schwarz. Test and measurement specialist Rohde & Schwarz and semiconductor manufacturer Marvell have demonstrated successfully, for the first time ever, all the 1000BASE-T1 compliance test cases for layer 1 (PHY). Using validated chipsets from Marvell and test equipment from Rohde & Schwarz, OEMs, Tier2, System Integrators and test houses can set up Automotive Ethernet networks that are fully compliant with 1000BASE-T1 specifications.

Trio achieve 5G prototype terminal trial success
Test and measurement specialist Rohde & Schwarz, telecommunications service provider China Mobile and mobile platform provider MediaTek have successfully carried out a technical trial of a 5G prototype terminal. The main purpose was to verify the signal characteristics and propagation of the mmWave terminal in different environments, both indoors and outdoors, and to investigate the effect that beam tracking and array antenna switching have on maintaining the stability of the mmWave signal.

Cellular-based 5G V2X latency measurements in vehicular environments have been successfully conducted by Rohde & Schwarz and Huawei in field tests in Munich and Shanghai. The initial measurements have shown that it is possible to achieve delays in the millisecond regime in a 5G network, demonstrating a superior latency performance in comparison to LTE.
