Automotive and IoT will drive IC growth up until 2021
According to IC Insights’ new 2018 Integrated Circuit Market Drivers Report, integrated circuit sales for automotive systems and the IoT are forecast to grow 70% faster than total IC revenues between 2016 and 2021. ICs used in automobiles and other vehicles are forecast to generate worldwide sales of $42.9bn in 2021 compared to $22.9bn in 2016, while integrated circuit revenues for IoT functionality in a wide range of systems, sensors, and objects are expected to reach $34.2bn in four years compared to $18.4bn last year, says the new 358-page report.

Global growth in the number of 'things' connected to the Internet continues to significantly outpace the addition of human users to the World Wide Web. New connections to the IoT are now increasing by more than 6x the number of people being added to the 'Internet of Humans' each year.

The IoT market will nearly double by 2019

Between 2015 and 2019, worldwide systems revenues for applications connecting to the IoT will nearly double, reaching $124.5bn in the final year of this decade, according to the 2016 edition of IC Insights’ IC Market Drivers report. During that same timeframe, new connections to the IoT will grow from about 1.7bn in 2015 to nearly 3.1bn in 2019 (Figure 1), based on the forecast in the new 450-page report, which examines emerging and major end-use applications fuelling demand for ICs.

Wearable devices boost IoT sales in 2015

Market revenues associated with network communications, sensing and control functions in subsystems and objects attached to the IoT are forecast to grow 29% in 2015 to $62.4bn after increasing 21% in 2014 to about $48.4bn, according to data in IC Insights’ recently released Update to its 2015 IC Market Drivers Report. Figure 1 provides a breakout of sales growth in five IoT market categories, based on IC Insights’ updated forecast.

IoT ICs are fastest growing market through 2018

Total production value of electronic systems increased 5% in 2014 to $1,488bn. While the electronic system production is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% from 2013-2018. Figure 1, below, compares the relative market sizes and projected growth rates of 10 major systems segments covered in the 2015 edition of IC Insights’ IC Market Drivers report.
