Provider of mobile communications systems, Cobham Wireless, has reported that commuters are frustrated with the state of mobile signal reception on train journeys up and down the UK. Results of a national online survey indicate that 52% of passengers are prevented from working some of the time during their commute, potentially stopping them from being able to check emails, stay in touch with clients and colleagues or access files remotely.

  The introduction of LTE-Advanced and 5G requires mobile operators to invest in virtual core network technology. To meet these demands, Cobham Wireless has launched TeraVM LaaS (Lab-as-a-Service) for core network testing. It is designed to support mobile operator networks as they shift towards virtualised, Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) infrastructures.

5G testing capabilities demonstrated at MWC 2017

Cobham Wireless announced it will demonstrate the industry’s first software-defined 5G user equipment (UE) simulator, based on Verizon’s open 5G standard, which can test downlink throughput of 10Gbps. The company will also showcase an IoT PoC solution, which is able to emulate up to one million 5G IoT devices, validating network performance in preparation for IoT connectivity. These demonstrations will be taking place at Mobile World Congress this year in Barcelona.

Digital radio gets enhanced test support
Automated test and alignment capabilities have been developed for Harris XL-200P P25 radios using the Cobham 3920B Digital Radio Test Set. The Harris XL-200P is a multiband portable radio that supports P25 communications on VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz spectrum. The Cobham 3920B is the only test set to date that Harris has certified for use/alignment for the XL-200P.
