Claiming to require half the components compared to other solutions, the bq500412 wireless power transfer circuit has been announced by Texas Instruments. The controller will enable designers to bring to market 3-coil, 5V and 12V A6 charging stations compliant with the WPC 1.1. specification.

Shipping in volume production and featuring foreign object detection, the transmitter circuit integrates all functions required to control wireless power delivery from the charging station to a receiver circuit. The controller features 12V charging pads and can be combined with a boost converter to create a 3-coil, 5V USB charging pad. This takes advantage of the Dynamic Power Limit feature which ensures quality operation independent of the power capability of the port. With the controller supporting an enhanced foreign object detection scheme, designers are provided with an easier way to implement the requirements of the WPC1.1 specification.

The bq500412 wireless power transmitter is available in a 48-pin, 7 x 7mm QFN package with a suggested resale price of US$2.93 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
