austriamicrosystems has announced that Nordic ID’s new multifunctional handheld computer -- called the Nordic ID Morphic -- utilizes austriamicrosystems’ AS3991 UHF RFID chip. The Nordic ID Morphic is a uniquely small sized and multifunctional handheld mobile computer with UHF RFID reading capability, something completely new for the RFID market. The Nordic ID Morphic also features WLAN, GPRS, Bluetooth communications, telephone functionality, and barcode or 2D readers.

The AS3991 UHF reader chip is an integrated analog front-end and data framing system for a 900MHz RFID reader system. Built-in programming options make it suitable for a wide range of applications in UHF RFID systems. Designed to simplify the design and implementation of an EPC Class1 Gen2 reader, austriamicrosystems’ AS3991 requires only a standard 8-bit microcontroller with minimal other components.

“The excellent performance of the Nordic ID Morphic and the rapid time to market reflects a high degree of expertise,” said Bruce Ulrich Marketing Director RFID at austriamicrosystems. “Market leaders like Nordic ID are choosing the AS399x UHF RFID reader series for their industry leading performance and low power consumption.”

According to Teemu Ainasoja, Solution Center Director, Nordic ID, “austriamicrosystems’ technology enabled us to easily integrate UHF RFID functionality into our new Nordic ID Morphic handheld mobile computer. Despite all its functionality, the Nordic ID Morphic is the size of a smart phone and weighs just 6.4 oz.”
