Spirent Communications today announced the availability of its Spirent Landslide Wi-Fi Offload Gateway Testing solution for Multi-System Operators. Spirent Landslide is the industry’s first solution to test the performance of Wi-Fi Offload Gateways.

These Gateways handle offloading of data from sources such as mobile video, as well as traditional services such as voice calling and SMS, from a 3G/4G/LTE network to Wi-Fi for transport over cable networks. Spirent is showcasing the solution at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo being held at the Orange County Convention Center, Oct. 17-19, 2012, in Orlando, FL.

In order to maximize the revenue surge from mobile data traffic and the smartphone/tablet revolution, MSOs need to maintain a consistent quality of experience level for end users, with the Wi-Fi Offload Gateway seamlessly delivering service handoff from the mobile network. Insuring this requires testing that can aid in the design and building of Wi-Fi offload systems. With its support of over 30,000 Wi-Fi access points and data from millions of subscribers over them, Spirent Landslide is able to identify capacity limits and verify application performance while under mobility scenarios such as hand-offs. All testing is done replicating real conditions with user behaviors, converged traffic, and network conditions that are all pushed to fully explore the behavior of the system under stress.

Spirent Landslide Wi-Fi Offload Gateway Testing solution was also recently recognized by BTR Diamond Technology Reviews for filling a need in the market, with technical features and performance that provide clear and substantial benefits for cable operators. The solution was rated four out of five diamonds by an independent panel of judges from companies such as Buckeye Cable Systems, Bright House, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Rogers Cable Communications Suddenlink, Sunflower Broadband and Time Warner Cable.

“The testing of Wi-Fi offloading services that can serve the needs of millions of consumer and business users requires a robust platform,” said Ross Cassan, director of product marketing, service provider solutions at Spirent. “Spirent has been supporting MSOs directly and through support of CableLabs as they built out their DOCSIS broadband networks. Now we are combining this experience with our leadership in mobile networking to help MSOs extend their networks’ capability to support the increasing data demands of users.”
