RF synthesiser/PLL combines high performance with low power

Featuring low power consumption and excellent phase noise performance, a wideband RF synthesiser/PLL has been introduced by Integrated Device Technology. The 8V97051 also generates fewer and lower power spurs than similar competing devices, which, combined with the power and phase noise, offers a unique competitive advantage for achieving optimal RF transmission and reception.

The 8V97051 integrates a VCO with a large tuning range capable of providing multiband local oscillator frequency synthesis, limiting the need for multiple narrow-band RF synthesisers/PLLs. This reduces the BOM and design complexity, lowering the cost of developing RF products. The device’s low-power consumption makes it suitable for use in high-performance applications with limited or no air flow, such as RF cards in base stations.

The 8V97051 has a figure of merit of -231dBc/Hz, which enables superior phase noise performance. The wideband RF synthesiser/PLL also provides 16-bits frequency resolution for precise RF instrumentation or radar applications. This device can also be used in microwave transceivers and industrial electronic products. The 8V97051 can generate frequencies from 34.375MHz to 4.4GHz and consumes only 380mW. The device delivers phase noise performance of -143dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset for a 1.1GHz output, and -146.5dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset for a 700MHz output.

Louise Gaulin, Vice President and General Manager, Network Communications Division, IDT, commented: “IDT now offers a unique device that is both wideband and delivers excellent phase noise performance without compromising low power consumption. The 8V97051 provides a solution that addresses the challenges of frequency generation for high-performance mixers and demodulators in RF board designs.”

The 8V97051 is offered in a compact 5x5mm 32-VFQFN package and is pin compatible to similar devices from other manufacturers.
