Ricocheting radio waves can monitor a person’s breathing
Relief may be on the horizon for anyone who has ever jumped around a room like a jack-in-the-box to get motion-sensing lights to turn back on. A new motion sensor based on metamaterials is sensitive enough to monitor a person’s breathing. In a pair of new studies, researchers from Duke University and Institut Langevin, France, have shown that patterns made by radio waves can detect a person’s presence and location anywhere inside a room.

Würth Elektronik eiSos has supported the winning team in the start-up competition 'DX-Labtrack' at the Hackathon TECHFEST in Munich from 14th to 17th June, 2018. Based on the AMBER PI design kit, they developed a prototype that permits documentation of proper transport of blood samples. On the subsequent 'Launchpad Day', the next project steps were specified between the representatives of DX-Labtrack and Würth Elektronik eiSos.

Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled the world’s first fully-integrated 5G NR mmWave and sub-6GHz RF modules for smartphones and other mobile devices. The Qualcomm QTM052 mmWave antenna module family and the Qualcomm QPM56xx sub-6GHz RF module family pair with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem to deliver modem-to-antenna capabilities across several spectrum bands, in a very compact footprint that is suited for integration in mobile devices.

Analog Devices has expanded its RadioVersef technology and design ecosystem with the industry’s widest bandwidth RF transceiver, which provides designers with a single radio platform to accelerate the deployment of 5G, sustain 2G/3G/4G coverage, and simplify phased array radar design. The ADRV9009 RF transceiver delivers twice the bandwidth (200MHz) of previous generation devices and replaces as many as 20 components, cutting power in half and package size by 60%.

Analog Devices has announced a synthesiser consisting of a phase-locked loop (PLL) with fully integrated voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) as well as integrated low dropout regulators (LDOs) and integrated tracking filter technology. The ADF4371 supports RF/microwave system designs that must meet the most exacting next-generation requirements across multiple markets, including aerospace and defense, test/measurement, communications infrastructure, as well as high-speed converter clocking.
