A family of SoC wireless transceivers, designed to support low data rate, intermittent communication IoT applications in smart metering and consumer appliances, is being introduced by ON Semiconductor at European Utility Week 2014. The NCS3651x transceivers are based on the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard.

Operating from a 1.0 to 3.6V battery, the devices are optimised for low power consumption and high efficiency. This power supply provides support for additional battery types while increasing battery life, and enables growing market demands for alternative energy solutions such as energy harvesting.

Alongside various configurations of RAM for data storage and FLASH memory for programme storage, which allow customers to support multiple application and software protocols, the NCS3651x transceivers incorporate a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor. Enabling the design of a complete wireless network with minimal external components, the devices feature multiple peripherals.

“Low-power, robust, integrated wireless communications devices will be key in helping the IoT and smart metering achieve their huge and exciting potential,” said Ryan Cameron, Vice President, Industrial and Timing products, ON Semiconductor. “At ON Semiconductor we have proven experience working on RF wireless device designs. This combined with our extensive mixed-signal and integration expertise has allowed us to develop and launch some truly enabling communications products that deliver low power consumption and high performance.”
