A wearable demonstration device, which combines low-power embedded processing, wireless, touch and sensor technologies, has been introduced by Atmel. Measuring 7x9cm, the Smart Badge brings together hardware and software technologies from Atmel and partners into an out-of-the-box solution that addresses the requirements of the wearable market.

Users can wear the device around their neck and display applications specialised for the Andriod OS and developed by Adeneo Embedded, an Atmel partner. Based on Atmel’s embedded connectivity, the demonstrator can interact with other Android mobile phones. The Smart Badge, which runs on the Android KitKat OS, features a 3.5” display from Precision Design Associates and embeds MEMS and sensor technology from Bosch Sensortec as well as a memory multi-chip package from Micron. Atmel is also developing a software framework that will allow various software partners to plug in their software and seamlessly work together.

According to the most recent forecast data from the International Data Corporation Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker, vendors will ship a total of 45.7m units in 2015, up 133.4% from the 19.6m units shipped in 2014. By 2019, total shipment volumes are forecasted to reach 126.1m units, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 45.1%.

With the anticipated growth of the wearable market, designers are looking for solutions that combine all the necessary technologies into a turnkey solution, enabling them to focus on differentiating their products. The Smart Badge is the first demonstrator to bring together the company’s low power SMART SAMA5D31 MPU, SMART SAM G54 sensor hub solution, maXTouch mXT112S controller and SmartConnect WILC3000 WiFi/Bluetooth integrated solution.
