The future of vision systems in manufacturing

With four times as many as colour receptors as humans, the Mantis shrimp has the most impressive eyes in nature. Manufacturers have long relied on human vision for complex picking and assembly processes, but 3D vision systems are beginning to replicate the capability of human vision in robotics. Here, Nigel Smith, Managing Director of TM Robotics, gives three rules to live by when choosing a 3D vision system for manufacturing.

Humans should embrace, rather than fear, robot co-workers

According to a recent report from the World Economic Forum, 85 million jobs could be lost and displaced by new technologies in the next five years. It’s no surprise that workers, particularly in manufacturing, worry how these developments will affect their jobs. Here, Nigel Smith, President and CEO of TM Robotics, explains why humans workers shouldn’t fear industrial robots, but rather see them as a bringer of new opportunities.

Pick, purchase and program your first industrial robot

Robots aren’t always given a favourable representation in pop culture. In Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), homicidal supercomputer HAL 9000 demonstrates how a robot could conspire against its human colleagues. Thankfully, industrial robots aren’t quite as menacing. Here, Nigel Smith, Managing Director of TM Robotics, gives advice to manufacturers to make their first robotic investment.

Counterfeit parts: manufacturing’s next threat?

Heard of the hover fly? Adorned with black and yellow stripes, these creatures take advantage of the wasp’s fearsome reputation by using mimicry to repel predators. Deception in nature is fascinating, but in the industrial equipment world, false imitation can be problematic, especially when it comes to counterfeit parts.

Good things come in automated packages

The earliest printed circuit boards, patented by Austrian inventor Paul Eisler in 1943, were assembled by hand. The tedious method involved manually cutting, trimming and soldering numerous wires. The process was slow and prone to error and unfortunately, it hasn’t evolved much since.
