STMicroelectronics has introduced an IC that delivers superior sound quality from portable music players and feature-phones by excluding high-frequency interference from cellphones. This new device is ideal for the growing number of cellphones being shipped with music-playback capabilities, which iSuppli predicts will grow to exceed one billion handsets annually by 2010, representing more than 90 percent of the market. It will also protect other portable music devices against interference from nearby cellphones.

ST-Ericsson is new name for Wireless-Semiconductor Industry Leader

The joint venture that united the wireless semiconductor division of STMicroelectronics and the mobile platform division of Ericsson will move forward as ST-Ericsson. This announcement follows the recent closing of the agreement announced in August 2008, between the parent companies, to merge Ericsson Mobile Platforms and ST-NXP Wireless.

STMicroelectronics has announced a compact audio power amplifier chip – intended for mobile phones and for other portable audio products – which creates 3D audio effects in the stereo speaker outputs to add impact and a surround-sound feel to MP3 and video files. The TS4997 can deliver 1.2W per channel of continuous average output power into 8-ohm loads, from a 5V supply — although it operates from supplies of as little as 2.7V — while its high-efficiency design and ultra-low standby power will help extend battery life.

STMicroelectronics Extends its Secure MCU Portfolio
STMicroelectronics has introduced two secure microcontrollers designed specifically for high-volume 2.5G and 3G (third-generation) mobile-phone SIM cards. The ST21Y036 and ST21Y144 provide 36 Kbytes and 144 Kbytes of user EEPROM, respectively, and they join the ST21Y068, which was announced towards the end of 2006 and is already in volume production. Based on an enhanced 8/16-bit CPU core with up to 16-Mbytes linear addressing capability, the family is produced in a state-of-the-art 0.13-micron EEPROM technology to meet industry demands for high volumes, short lead times and competitive pricing.

STMicroelectronics has announced a new 2-megapixel camera subsystem intended for the high-volume mainstream camera-phone market. The new VS6724 is the latest in ST’s camera-on-chip family, joining the successful 1.3-megapixel VS6624 and VGA-resolution VS6524 modules. It combines a high-quality multi-element lens with a 1/4-inch CMOS sensor and on-chip processing, in a tiny industry-standard package, to deliver superb UXGA-resolution (1600 x 1200 pixels) images.
