Compact low power CMOS radar features on-chip antennas
At the International Microwave Symposium in Philadelphia, US, Imec announced the first CMOS 140GHz radar-on-chip system with integrated antennas in standard 28nm technology. The achievement is an important step in the development of radar-based sensors for a myriad of smart intuitive applications, such as building security, remote health monitoring of car drivers, breathing and heart rate of patients, and gesture recognition for man-machine interaction.

Low power radio for IoT applications demonstrated with Arm
  At this year’s Bluetooth Asia event, imec will demonstrate a new ultra low power radio for IoT applications, with Arm (at booth 49). The radio combines imec’s latest transceiver frontend, operating from a nominal supply as low as 0.8V, with Arm’s qualified and silicon-proven Cordio Bluetooth low energy 5 digital baseband.

Benchmark with 30cm secure localisation solution based on Bluetooth
Imec has announced at its Imec Technology Forum, ITF2018, taking place in Antwerp on 23rd to 24th May, that it has developed a new secure proximity technology that enables an accuracy as good as 30cm. This IoT technology, that was developed by imec researchers in Holst Centre (the Netherlands) and researchers from COSIC, an imec lab at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), sets a new benchmark in localisation accuracy using a standard Bluetooth radio.

Ultra-low power transceiver suitable for Bluetooth 5
  A low-voltage (0.8V) ultra-low-power Bluetooth 5 transceiver for IoT applications has been announced by imec and Renesas Electronics at the 2018 International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco (US). The low supply voltage enables a longer battery life, with up to 50% improvement.

Plastic RFID system integrates screen-printed circuitry
A plastic 12-bit RFID tag and read-out system with screen-printed circuitry has been demonstrated by Quad Industries, Agfa, imec and TNO. The system integrates, for the first time, a screen-printed antenna and printed touch-based user interface, allowing implementation of the reader on curved surfaces. The demonstrator has been designed for badge security applications, but holds promises for many other applications, including smart packages, wearables and interactive games.

Compact digital receiver suitable for Bluetooth 5 and beyond
A novel phase-tracking receiver bringing further power and cost reduction for the next generations of Bluetooth and IEEE802.15.4 radio chips has been developed by imec and Holst Centre (initiated by imec and TNO). It supports supply voltages as low as 0.85V and consumes less than 1.6mW peak. A low power antenna impedance detection technique enhances radio performance, especially for wearables or implantable applications. The ongoing evolution towards an intuitive IoT has created unprecedented opportunities in various application domains.

Imec develop complete low-power WiFi HaLow radio solution

At this week’s Design Automation Conference (DAC 2016), nanoelectronics research center imec, Holst Centre (initiated by imec and TNO), and WiFi IP provider Methods2Bussiness will present a complete WiFi HaLowradio solution. The low-power, long-range radio solution uses 10 times less power than state-of-the-art orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) radio solutions on the market. It can be used for a broad range of applications related to the IoT and complies with the most recent wireless networking protocol, IEEE 802.11ah.

Time-based ECG readout chip designed for wearables
imec and Holst Centre, an open-innovation initiative set-up by imec and TNO, have presented a 0.6V ECG readout chip in 40nm technology based on time-domain circuit techniques. The chip maintains consistent beat detection capabilities, even under movement (~40mVpp), paving the way to a low cost, low power multi-sensor SoC solution for wearable medical applications.

CMOS SAW-less digital transmitter enables advanced 3, 4 & 5G
imec and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) have demonstrated a 0.22mm2 CMOS resistive charge-based direct launch digital transmitter with -159dBc/Hz out-of-band noise. The achievement paves the way to small form-factor SAW-less transmitter implementations enabling advanced wireless communication systems including all the cellular standards 3G, 4G and future 5G.

Next generation health and fitness tracker
The results of a collaboration between Cloudtag and imec on accurate frictionless wearable health solutions were revealed at the CES show in Las Vegas this week. Cloudtag Track, a new wearable fitness tracker that was launched at the show, combines fitness and health monitoring with design to advance both fitness wearables as well as wearables in the care, cure and prevention cycle by providing immediate access to accurate medical data and personalised feedback.

imec and UEST, have announced that they have started the production of Zembro, a smart bracelet designed to enable the elderly to connect with their relatives immediately, anytime and anywhere. Zembro is the first commercial product from UEST. The initial set of Zembro Bracelets, which sold out immediately after the launch (April 2015), are being delivered since the beginning of November.
