It has been announced by Vodafone that it will be switching on its 5G network for both consumers and business customers in seven cities across the UK on 3rd July. Here, commenting on the news, Ken Karnofsky, Senior Strategist for Signal Processing Applications at MathWorks, believes this marks a significant point in the rollout of 5G throughout the UK.
However, for other organisations to keep up with Vodafone they need to make sure they have the right technology to realise their plans.
“The rollout of 5G in the UK will deliver myriad benefits to both businesses and consumers. The new protocol is intended to deliver high-speed, high-capacity, and low-latency wireless services to enable faster mobile broadband connections, many more connected devices for industry and consumers, and safety critical applications such as automated driving.
“However, the latest standard specification presents some significant challenges for the designers of 5G systems. Most importantly, there is the necessity to increase the data rate and capacity of mobile broadband networks. What’s more, when adopting 5G, wireless engineers need to verify that their product designs can conform or co-exist with a new, complex standard that will continue to evolve.
“So how can Vodafone’s peers and suppliers overcome these hurdles so they aren’t left behind in the 5G race? By utilising the latest modelling tools their designers can verify their projects using simulation, rather than waiting for expensive and time-consuming lab and field tests.
“The models can be used as a golden reference for implementation and can help to automate testing in order to verify that designs function correctly throughout the development process.”
