Freescale Semiconductor is driving next-gen, multi-gigabit broadband access toward mainstream adoption with the industry’s first 10Gb/s Internet plus 10Gb/s WiFi enabled home gateway solution.

Freescale developed its QorIQ LS1043A residential gateway in collaboration with Quantenna Communications. Coupled with open, Linux-based security, video streaming and networking applications, the platform enables dramatic boosts in bandwidth, throughput and quality of service.

The Freescale solution leverages its quad-core QorIQ LS1043A processor based on 64-bit ARMv8 technology, together with Quantenna’s QSR10G 10G Wave 3 802.11ac WiFi product family. This latest Quantenna product family can support up to 12 streams, and is based on its True 8x8 adaptive, Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) technology, which provides the flexibility and scalability to meet rising demand for home access points that can manage and support increasing numbers of WiFi devices. The reference solution also features a 10Gb/s copper or fibre WAN connection enabled by the QorIQ LS1043A processor’s 10G Ethernet port.

The companies collaborated to leverage Quantenna’s WiFi innovation, resulting in the ability to identify and categorise wireless and Internet traffic for streaming and time-sensitive priority, resulting in optimised gaming, video streaming and Internet voice quality, even under highly demanding usage conditions.

“We are excited about the possibilities of our ground breaking 10G Wave 3 WiFi product family and believe that Freescale’s long history and expertise in networking makes them a suitable partner to create applications which can help OEMs and service providers quickly and easily get 10G Wave 3 WiFi products to market,” said Lionel Bonnot, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Quantenna. “The optimised security and 10G performance of Freescale’s LS1043A processor opens the door for next-gen user applications and enhanced quality of wireless experience in the home.”

“Delivering on the promise of Quantenna’s 10G Wave 3 WiFi product family demands a level of packet processing performance that was previously the exclusive domain of high-end enterprise networking equipment, yet today Freescale is uniquely positioned to bring power-efficient, multi-gigabit performance to the home,” commented Nikolay Guenov, Director of Product Management for Freescale’s Digital Networking group. “With this reference design, we are helping to advance the next level of WiFi performance, reliability and capacity to deliver a higher quality of experience to customers and operators.”
