When you think of the word wearable, a lot of cool VR/AR headsets, sports and fitness wear springs to mind. At this year’s Wearable Technology Show RealWear were showcasing its latest wearable- the RealWear HMT-1 a new kind of industrial wearable. Designed for skilled technicians and engineers in field service, equipment inspection, maintenance and complex manufacturing assembly, RealWear describes the headset as ‘the birth of a new category for mobile work’.

The RealWear HMT-1 provides a foundation for a Connected Worker programme. Use it in wet, dusty, hot, dangerous and loud industrial environments, this fully rugged head-mounted device optionally snaps into safety helmets and can be worn with safety glasses or corrective eyewear.

The RealWear HMT-1 is designed for heavy industry. Exceeding fully rugged norms, it goes beyond MIL-SPEC 810G specifications and can be dropped onto concrete from a height of two metres, and is waterproof against even powerful jets of water.

The high-resolution microdisplay fits just below your line of sight, and provides you with an industrial dashboard: there when you need it and pushed out of the way when you don’t.

Using a powerful Android tablet the headset works through your voice and gestures, and can fit on to a hard had, or comes with a head band/strap that comfortably sits on your head.

The HMT-1 works with powerful software applications from the solution partners in five main categories, each of which are optimised by the completely hands-free voice control. There are no worries of scrolling, swiping or tapping, just simply voice commands.

The headset can be used for remote mentor video calling, document navigation, mobile forms, work instructions and industrial IoT data visualisation.

The fully rugged hands-free head mounted tablet with a micro-display is adjustable and emulates a mini-tablet screen. Featuring advanced noise cancellation and voice recognition, workers can navigate applications and enter text and numbers just by speaking in a normal voice.

The voice recognition delivers 95% accuracy in up to 100 dB of ambient industrial noise. You hear spoken acknowledgement and tones immediately indicating successful recognition. Documents and larger screens can be panned by moving your head.

The display contains 854×480 pixels appearing as the size of 7” tablet held at arm’s length and viewable in bright sunlight.

RealWear has ensured that the product and display does not interfere with the worker’s front facing direct line of sight to the scene, and can be flipped up to achieve zero occlusion whenever it’s not needed.

The headset comes fitted with a boom arm with adjustability to accommodate any head size and eye relief needed, with the entire unit being able to rotate to work with people who are left eye dominant.

And there are no excuses as it is comfortable to wear constantly for an eight hour shift.

Video calls utilise the high performance, 4-axis optically image stabilised auto-focus camera and clear two-way audio. Step-by-step voice and visual work instructions in the line of sight reduce rework and speed assembly.

The camera includes a 16MP autofocus and image stabilised for high-resolution photos that capture, and provide real-time video chat.

Connected through WiFi + Bluetooth LE, to LTE smart phones, portable hotspots or plug-in USB dongles, the headset can be tracked through GPS, gyroscopes and digital compass for positioning – detects Bluetooth beacons.

The HMT-1 is built to resist years of exposure to skin oils, sweat and bright sunlight. Its various adjustments remain precise with daily use.

For potentially explosive atmospheres, it will also offer an intrinsically safe model certified for use in the more stringent ATEX Zone 1 and FMC1/D1 categories and their national equivalents in other countries.

Performing like the hardest working employee, the RealWear HTM-1 has an unprecedented battery life in a head mounted wearable device. The standard on-board 3250mAh Lithium Ion battery runs for a full shift in real world conditions.

Additionally, with a worker-centric approach, it all adds up to giving the employee the confidence to approach their job with immediate access to relevant information and remote expertise with the extra safety margin and efficiency boost that helps them achieve their highest performance level.
