Low-power mesh compatibility enhances BLE portfolio

NXP Semiconductors has announced the addition of low power mesh compatibility to its Bluetooth Smart portfolio, recently acquired from Quintic’s BLE and wearable businesses. These capabilities will enhance the company’s Bluetooth offerings which are subset solutions from the company’s low power connectivity standards relevant to the IoT, including NFC, ZigBee and Bluetooth Smart.

Altera has joined the Industrial Internet Consortium, a collaborative industry organisation facilitating development of a global IoT ecosystem.  Altera is working alongside the consortium on technical roadmaps to build the Industrial Internet, a network of intelligent devices and sensors between which data can be exchanged via different connectivity protocols to drive productivity across a range of end-market applications.

Designed for IoT applications, Toshiba Electronics Europe expands its selection of ApP Lite processors. The TZ5010XBG and the TZ5011XBG application processors are based on a 1.0GHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor, while the TZ5021XBG and TZ5023XBG are based on an 800MHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor.

Design centres to help develop products in IoT market

CEA-Leti have announced that 15 of their partners, have set up the goals of their collaborative project to establish a network of design centres to help SMEs and large companies develop innovative products for emerging IoT markets. The group will use proven CPS platforms and working with research technology organisations or technology transfer-oriented university institutes, who cluster a wide spectrum of technical and application knowledge to support innovation.

Bluetooth Smart SoCs are the 'smallest' IoT solution
Low power, Bluetooth Smart SoC ICs, aimed at high volume, high growth consumer markets, have been released by Dialog Semiconductor. The DA14581, DA14582 and DA14583 SoCs, which expand the company’s SmartBond family, are claimed to be the smallest and lowest power wireless connectivity solutions for the IoT. Versions optimised for wireless charging and Remote Control Units (RCU) address markets that will ship over 1.5bn units per annum within 4 years.

IoT ICs are fastest growing market through 2018

Total production value of electronic systems increased 5% in 2014 to $1,488bn. While the electronic system production is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% from 2013-2018. Figure 1, below, compares the relative market sizes and projected growth rates of 10 major systems segments covered in the 2015 edition of IC Insights’ IC Market Drivers report.
