Easy Bluetooth Smart app development with TI's SensorTag app for Android 4.3

Following the recent launch of Android 4.3 “Jelly Bean” with native support of Bluetooth Smart Ready, Texas Instruments unveil the Bluetooth Smart SensorTag app for Android. Available here for free , TI's new Bluetooth Smart SensorTag app removes entry barriers for app developers wanting to take advantage of the millions of Android smartphones and tablets that will soon be Bluetooth Smart Ready.

TI eases and speeds Bluetooth Smart “appcessory” development with the CC2541-based SensorTag, featuring Android and iOS support. The CC2541-based SensorTag features six commonly used sensors on a single board for quick evaluation and demo. The $25 SensorTag kit has been widely embraced since it does not require hardware or software expertise and sample Bluetooth Smart applications can be run on a smartphone or tablet in minutes.


The SensorTag has already been used by Android and iOS developers and device manufacturers in order to fuel the Bluetooth Smart appcessory market. Suke Jawanda, chief marketing officer, Bluetooth SIG, commented: “the addition of Bluetooth Smart support in Android 4.3 is a huge growth opportunity for the market, making it possible for Bluetooth Smart appcessories to workwith all OSs. Through initiatives like TI’s SensorTag and the Bluetooth SIG’s Bluetooth Developer Portal, developers can get a head start with Android 4.3 to meet consumers’ desire for more Bluetooth Smart apps and appcessories.”


Featuring six integrated sensors, including TI’s TMP006 contactless IR temperature sensor, the SensorTag brings countless applications to life. Possible applications include health and fitness, educational tools, toys and remote controls, and mobile phone accessories; all of which can be controlled by asmartphone, tablet or laptop.


TI’s royalty-free BLE-Stack software can be used with the SensorTag to offer an over-the-air download feature to maintain compatibility with end-equipment firmware updates. the CC2541-based SensorTag kit also complements TI’s CC2564 Bluetooth dual-mode solution and WiLink combo connectivity solutions.
